I have reviewed 3rd party Microsoft Surface Docks in the past but up until now I have not looked at the official Microsoft Surface Dock. The Microsoft Surface Dock uses the Surface connector rather than the USB port of the 3rd party device I tested which means you still have the USB 3.0 port on the Surface available while docked. The good thing about the Microsoft Dock is that Microsoft have committed to using the same Surface connector on all Surface devices, this dock works with the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, Surface Book, Surface Laptop and the new Surface Pro.
The dock has 2 mini Display Ports for connecting two external monitors, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 4 USB 3.0 ports and a headphone port. It comes with its own power supply and the dock powers the Surface. It’s a well-constructed and heavy (550g) device so probably not something you would want to carry around with you, it is definitely something you want to leave on your desk to connect the Surface to when you return to base. There are no drivers to install and everything works out of the box.
It’s not a cheap devices, priced at £189.99 at the Microsoft Store it’s a lot more than some of the 3rd party docks but it is the best available and it does charge the Surface and the cost standard Surface charger is £80, the 3rd party dock I recently reviewed doesn’t charge the Surface so you have to factor that in when comparing docks.
