There is no doubt Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 is a great devices, I use mine all the time and after a year I still get great battery life out of it. It seems like I am lucky because I have an LGC battery in my device, if you have a Simplo battery you could have real problem. Barb Bownman has been trying to help uses out in Microsoft’s Answers forums where there are reports of extremely poor battery life with their year old devices and the common item seems to be devices with Simplo batteries. Surface Pro 3 owners are reporting battery file of minutes and rather than hours with the devices that cost over £1000.

Using the built in Windows battery analysis tool (run “powercfg /batteryreport” from an elevated command prompt) Surface Pro 3 owner see battery capacity drastically dropping off from the original 42,157 mWh right down to 144 mWh in the space of a few months. This takes battery life down from 6 hours to only a couple of minutes. This is not an isolated incident, there are many reports in the forums all with the same issue, and it seems to be only affecting Surface devices with Simplo batteries and not LGC (You can tell the type of battery from the powercfg report)

Here is an example from the forum:

This is my podcast co-host @database ‘s report:

Here is mine Surface  Pro 3 with the LGC battery and is working fine:

There are 5 pages of posts on the forums and so far Microsoft haven’t responded, they need to soon as it renders the devices pretty useless.

How is the battery on your Surface Pro 3?

  1. I have the Simplo battery and it dies when I pull out the power cord. It seems to have started degrading after an Update in May.
