At long last Microsoft have finally responded to the Surface Pro 3 battery issue that has been causing reduced battery life on some devices. In reply on the very long thread on Microsoft’s forums Greg from the Surface team says it is not an issue with the battery cells and they think it could be fixed via a software update. They say that details will be shared in the forums and this could be great news for the many Surface Pro 3 owners suffering from serious battery issues. There was a concern that the batteries could be permanently damaged but this looks like it may not be the case, what it means for owners that have already paid for extra support will remain to be seen.

Here is the forum post:

Hello everyone,

We are aware of some customers reporting a scenario with their Surface Pro 3 batteries in which the system is reporting lower battery capacity than expected. We’ve isolated this to a limited number of customers experiencing this issue.

Based on our investigations we can confirm that it is not an issue with the battery cells, and we believe this is something that can be addressed via software.

We’re working through the details of how we deliver that.

Thank you all for the details you’ve shared here,
Greg
