I have been using a Lumia 950 XL since last year and really love Microsoft latest flagship but one of the issues I had with it is that if you take the newer Windows Insiders builds of Windows 10 Mobile (which fixes a lot of issues over the initial release) you couldn’t then get the new firmware updates for the phone. In the end I had to use the Windows Device Recovery Tool to reset the phone, get the latest firmware and then install the preview builds which is not ideal as you have to wipe the phone.

Microsoft have recognised the problem and will have a solution but in the mean time they have a workaround. With the Windows Insider app you need to select Get preview builds and select Production which removes your phone from the Insider program and after a reboot if there is a firmware update available you can update your phone via Phone Updates. Once you have the update you can switch back to the Fast or Slow ring and continue receiving preview builds.

All of which is a lot better than doing a complete reset. You can read the complete set by step instructions in the Microsoft Forums.
