One of the first apps I install on a new Windows system is Windows Store version of VLC, it’s a great media player and works on Windows 8.1, Windows RT and now has been optimised for Windows 10.

The first change you notice is the renaming, it was called VLC for Windows 8 and is now called VLC for Windows Store which makes more sense as we move to Windows 10. The user interface has been updated, it has a Windows 10 style UI and works much better on slower devices like the Surface RT and low end Lumia phones. There is also a new mini player for listening to music and it even shows you the current playlist if you expand it.

Other changes include improved metadata for music, a new “Add to current playlist” option, better resuming of movies and I also noticed they have simplified the settings screen.

Overall the app feels a lot faster and smoother, video player back seems much improved especially on lower spec devices. Good work from the VLC team.

The app is free from the Windows Store.
