At the Gadget Show live I came across a home plug solution that uses Wifi for you to be able to control mains socket and monitor the consumption of the devices connected to them. The plug uses your home WiFi so you can connect to it from anywhere around the world. They have Android and iOS apps give you control features and location enabled triggers, so imagine coming home and you house springing in to life when you got close by.
