Yesterday at the WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Community) Microsoft announced that it is planning to release Windows 10 this summer. That gives them a pretty big window to ship the new operating system but should mean it will be available for the back to school season and Christmas sales. If I had to put money on when it will actually release given the track record of Technical Preview releases I would say it will be right at the end of Summer!
In a presentation at WinHEC and available online the minimum requirements for Windows 10 were detailed. Windows 10 for phones minimum requirements are about the same as Windows phone 8.1 which is 512MB of RAM and 4GB storage. For phones with large screen the memory requirements are higher (960 x 540 1GB, 1440×900 2GB, 2048×1152 3GB and 2560×2048 4GB). See the table above for more details.
Screen size can range from 3 inch to 7.99 inch so theoretically you could have a 7.99 inch phone with 2560×2048 display which would trump my Lumia 1520! The question is whether a 7 inch Windows tablet is better running the phone OS or the full Windows desktop?
For desktops the minimum requirements pretty much the same as Windows 8.1. The minimums are 800×600 or higher , 1GB RAM for 32bit OS and 2GB of RAM for 64bit systems. One interesting thing on the slide is that it says 8 inch or great for consumer devices and 7 inch or higher for Pro. This I the first time I see mention of Pro and Consumer versions talked about by Microsoft related to Windows 10.
