There is a new Media Center system for Linux users called Plasma Media Center. It’s from KDE the graphical desktop for Linux and is built on KDE’s Plasma and KDE technologies and is designed to be a rich media experience. KDE say the aim is to unify media experience on the PC,tablets, netbooks and TVs running KDE. It has music, picture and video features and an API for developers to write custom plugins.
If you are running Linux with KDE then this may be something worth looking at. So far on Linux the best option has probably been XBMC and this looks like a good alternative but it could take some time before the plugin ecosystem reaches XBMC levels.
Checkout the video of Plasma Media Center Release One in action and you can download the 1.0 release from kde.org. There are instructions on how in install on Unbuntu and Fedora, I may just give it a try over the weekend, let me know if you give it a try.
KDE’s Plasma Media Center (PMC) is aimed towards a unified media experience on PCs, Tablets, Netbooks, TVs and any other device that is capable of running KDE. PMC can be used to view images, play music or watch videos. Media files can be on the local filesystem or accessed with KDE’s Desktop Search. This stable release of PMC has a basic set of features:
Browse the local filesystem for media
Use KDE Desktop Search to get a unified view of all available media
View photos from flickr, picasa
Create playlists from available media, play sequentially or randomly
Developers can create custom plugins for PMC!
