As part of our tie up with Vonage we are giving away an iPod Touch or Apple TV so I thought it would be a good idea to review the service. The idea behind the app is free calling between Vonage mobile users and low rates to call landlines and mobiles, also Vonage say the call quality is better than rival services. I installed the app on a Samsung Galaxy Note and it scanned my contacts for other Vonage users in my address book.

To test it properly I ask Garry to install it on his iPhone and then gave him a call, he was using his iPhone over wifi and I used the Android device over 3G. The call quality was excellent, much better than using a normal voice call and better than Skype to Skype calls, there was no delay or echo and no drop out during the call. We also tried text messaging and that works just as you expect, it uses the data network rather than coming from your text bundle.

As well as Vonage to Vonage calls you can also call landlines and mobile numbers. You buy credit via an in-app purchase and Vonage say the rates are lower than Skype’s rates (see the table at the bottom of the post).

The service works really well and if you do a lot of international calling could well save you some money. The app is free for iPhone and Android, find out more here
