imageIt looks like there is a simple way to bypass the carriers blocking that are stopping Windows Phone users getting their hands on the long awaited NoDo update.  I saw this guide over at WMPoweruser.com and have tried it on my Vodafone HTC Trophy and it worked (after the normal update procedure reported no updates.)

  1. Start Zune
  2. Turn off Data connection and Wifi on the Phone
  3. Connect the Phone with the PC (USB)
  4. Start the update search in Zune
  5. About 3 seconds later, disconnect your PC from the internet (Turn WLAN off).
  6. Zune finds NoDo-Update. Press OK.
  7. Connect to the internet again and install the update.

Admittedly, I had to be a bit quick off the mark regarding disabling the internet before the update check finished (I use wired internet rather than wireless) but I now have copy and paste goodness at my fingertips.  Not that I missed it much, if I’m honest, but its nice to know its there.

At some point Microsoft will have start standing up to the carriers more than they are now.  This workaround shows how easy it would be to take the carriers out the equation completely.  After all, its not as it the carriers are doing Microsoft many favours in terms of retail, product placement and customer satisfaction…

  1. Woohoo!

I got the Feb update automatically this morning, I’m forcing the NoDo update right now!

    Fingers crossed all goes well…….

  2. It took about 45 minutes to do the update on my 8gb Trophy. Most of which was the back-up process.

    Good luck!

  3. All done!

Just over 30 mins (half full 16GB HD7)

Thanks for posting the workaround 🙂

I wonder how it was discovered – I’d love to think it was MS who leaked it!
