I have had the original Apple TV for a few months and while it is limited my kids love it for playing music so I thought it would be good to see how the the new Apple TV matches up.

The first thing you notice is the size, its really small compared to the old Apple TV and its not much bigger than an iPhone. The new device looses the component video connections and has only got HDMI, optical audio, power and Ethernet ports.

In the box you get the Apple TV, a remote and a power cable. I remote is a little bigger than the old Apple remote and feels a bit more substantial. Once connected up you can enter your iTunes account details so you can consume content from a PC running iTunes (which needs to be kept open) or you can buy content directly from iTunes.

When streaming content from a PC the functionality seems almost the same as old Apple TV but there are a few more key presses needed to get to the music but other than that I couldn’t see a lot of differences.   I also had a go at streaming podcasts and that seems to work fine.

I think the new Apple TV has potential if Apple decide to add apps at some point but without apps its a little disappointing. The other thing I hope to see are some hacks for the box, the ATVFlash hack for the old device makes it a much more useful box and it would be great if someone can open up this device.  At £99 its not a bad buy but it needs more features to make it really good.

  1. What’s the performance like when compared to, say, an extender such as the xbox (or silent extender, such as the linksys) – how quickly does it start from stand-by and how fast do videos start playing?
