Boxee continues to evolve as a great platform for delivering internet video to the TV and today they announced a payment model for pay per view content. Later this year content providers will be able to offer premium content via Boxee and charge for the content (with Boxee taking a cut). This is something that isn’t offered in Media Center and I can’t imagine it ever happening, Zune Marketplace seems to be Microsoft’s target platform for premium on demand content.

I think this model is a great idea as it enables premium content without having to have services like CableCARD or Satellite, I guess its not unlike Apple’s model with TV shows in iTunes

Read the rest of Avner Ronen post (you can hear Avner on last weeks podcast), do you think this is a good model?

This is why we plan to release a Payment Platform this summer where users will be able to make purchases with one click on the remote. The content partners we launch with will offer shows, movies and channels that were previously not available to Boxee users. The content owners will be able to package and price as they wish, including pay-per-view and subscription. Content partners will have the flexibility to decide what they make available, whether it’s premium content, content from their existing library, or extras that will never make it “on air”.
