image There are loads of ways out there for you to view your archived TV.  There are some great addins like myTV but I’m currently much happier just using the Video Library, but it looks a bit better than normal!

I’ve arranged my Videos into two folders, Films and TV Shows.  I keep films in there because although I use OML to view my films, sometimes I need something a bit more basic.  Then within my TV Shows folder I have a folder for each Show and within there a folder for each Season.  So Entourage\Season1 for example.

I make it look nicer by using the IMDB of TV shows, thetvdb.com.  This is a great online database of TV shows that includes artwork for each show, stuff like banners, posters and importantly some user submitted art.  On the website they use a neat little preview which I’ve found works perfectly as a cover image for the show.  All I have to do is right click and select Save As… and name the file folder.jpg and save it in TV Shows\Entourage.  I don’t really care about meta data and the navigation is dead fast.

  1. I haven’t tried myTV, but the Video Library app available on TGB by Jackluminous works really well. I’m also of the mind to keep TV and Movies separate – MyMovies is what I use currently, but I’m looking at OML as my movie frontend.

  2. I use myTV to view my archived TV Shows. Mainly for the WAF and the little user intervention to setup a folder. I don’t like having to go out and get a new banner for new shows. I like the fact I can just create a new folder with the name of the show and have my archived shows just go in there and mytv picks it up and gets all the metadata about it along with a nice banner.
Personally I think metadata is important for media, especially if you have a lot of it. I think you shouldn’t have to pick your media source. All media should have a universal ID like UPC codes and then you could write an application that you just pick the media you want show name — > season –> episode and the app would go to the sources it has access to (Recorded TV, archived tv, Netflix Watch It Now, Hulu, etc.) and play it. You could then rank your sources and it would pick the top one that is available. The app could then suggest stuff based on your viewing preferences across all sources. I started working on an app like that but trying to figure out what a media item is based on name is extremely difficult. And every source has a different way of categorizing things.
Sorry this comment got a little long and way off topic. By the way, I like what you are posting about so far. Look forward to hearing more from you.

  3. One of the problems is that there isn’t a good single version of the truth, i.e. single meta data source, for TV shows. thetvdb.com is my favourite though.
