I have been a happy Treo 750v user for quite some time it works well with Exchange for my corporate email and I can use Gmail’s IMAP features for my personal  email. As the Treo was getting a bit old I was thinking of trying some of the newer Windows Mobile devices (no the iPhone is no good for me as my corporate account is Vodafone)

So I was pleasantly surprised to find a HP iPAQ 910 Messenger in my bag from HP this week. The iPAQ (which will start shipping June 30th) is a very neat device thinner and lighter than my Treo with a very nice keyboard running Windows Mobile 6.1. As it’s got built in GPS I have installed tomtom’s navigator software on it and it’s working well in the car. So I am going to give it a go and ditch the Treo

Some specs:

Bluetooth, wifi, 3 mega pixel camera, 3G, HSDPA,GPS, 128MB and a 2.46 320×240 colour touchscreen. The weight is 154g / 5.4oz

  1. In terms of GPS functionality, how would you say a device like this
running TomTom software compares to what you would get from
a native TomTom device in the car? What are the real advantages
    and disadvantages?

  2. I like having one device so you don’t get a big screen as you do with a dedicated device but the display is clear and its very usable
Plus I also have the software 🙂

  3. I’m down to the 910 and the Samsung i780 which have very similar specs, but the optical mouse on the Samsung makes me a little weary.

How much free RAM does the 910 have after a reboot? Also, does it feel snappy overall?

  4. hello friend a question GPS must be connected to the network every time ISP to download the position of satellites or as the HP hw6945 which takes place every 7 days updating?

    Thanks

    for TomTom

    Thanks

  6. Hello Ian,

What version of TomTom are you running on the IPAQ 910.
I’m having problems in getting mine to work.
What GPS receiver and COM port did you set yours too?

    Your help is greaty appreciated.
    Thanks,
    JuLz

  7. I’d also like to hear how you’ve managed to get TomTom installed on the device, and if so – which version. I’ve just grabbed ttn.ppc.6.030.8320.cab from the TomTom site, but I’m just getting Installation was unsuccessful.

  8. Might be a bit late but I just got my 914c today. I used NMEA on COM6: and TomTom is up and running again.

  9. I have a question. I cant seem to get Messenger to work and it keeps on synchronizing the whole time.

Are there any bugs with windows mobile 6.1 ??

  10. Frank Ross: The answer to your question will determine whether or not I buy the 910. Im currently using the 6945 and i do not have a data plan and my gps works just fine. Will it be the same with 910? If anyone has the answer pls email at [email protected].

    Thanks all.
