When we record our weekly podcast Garry, Jason and I often chat over Skype discussing the topics, feedback etc. While we are chatting just about every device I have in the house is buzzing and pinging away with chat notifications, in fact last night Jason was on his Lumia tablet and his phone was pinging away in another room and becoming very annoying.

Fortunately Skype are going to fix this problem by only sending notification to the device you are currently using. So if you are using Skype on your PC and are chatting over Skype your other devices (including your phone) will remain silent. Once you stop using Skype on the device it will revert to sending you notifications to all your devices so you don’t miss a notification. I have to say it’s about time, it a neat solution to the problem and it should make life a little quieter.

To get this feature you need to make sure you are using the latest versions of the Skype clients.

Details from the Skype Blog:

If you are signed in to Skype on multiple devices (a laptop, tablet and a smartphone) and you are sending chat messages to a group of friends from your tablet. Skype will only send new message notifications to your tablet and not to any of your other devices. All of your other devices will remain blissfully silent.  You can continue to focus on the most important thing, your conversations, without being disturbed by the bleeping and buzzing from all of your other devices.

The moment you stop actively using Skype on any device, all devices will receive notifications again to make sure you never miss anything important. When you pick up any one of your devices to respond, we will stop send notifications to all other devices. Call notifications are still sent to all devices so you can answer on whichever gadget you prefer, not just the one you’re closest to.
