Since getting the Nexus 7 I have started using Google Play Books and this week the app was updated. The update adds support for embedded video and audio in the books as well as otherfixes and tweaks.

It will be interesting to see how publishers make use of the feature.

Details from Google Play:

What’s in this version:

Add bookmarks to a page by tapping the top right corner or using the menu.
Stream video and audio embedded in books.
Support fixed-layout EPUBs (on Honeycomb or higher), SVG images(on Honeycomb or higher), and original fonts.
Enable or disable auto text-to-speech in “Settings” menu.
Enable or disable downloading via WiFi only in “Settings” menu.
Links in books now work.
Bug fixes.

  1. Have you ever gotten embedded audio to work? My son’s kindergarten teacher made an e-book of the stuff he’s been doing this year; and the embedded audio won’t play for me (she says it works perfectly in iBook though). I wonder if it’s because the play button is near the corner of the page so Play Books interprets that as a turn-page tap. Thanks,
