Apple TV the most popular connected set top box

Product Image

This year we have seen lots of set top boxes launch like the Boxee Box and the Google TV devices but according to market research firm Strategy Analytics the most popular is Apple 2nd gen Apple TV. The £99 box is to be found in 8% of US homes and 7% of European homes which gives it 32% of the connected set top box market. Coming up in second place is Roku’s device (due in the UK next year), considering the limited features of the Apple TV the number is impressive but I guess with the Apple name on the box its going to sell.

Anybody got one on their Christmas list?

Where was the xbox? Oh, not part of the survey.

I was swayed to recommend this to a friend based on the Airplay mirroring. The ability to use your iPad 2 or 4s to find content and wirelessly stream it to your big screen opens up the otherwise limited content door.

I have to wonder what percentage of Apple TV users are using it hacked to run XBMC :)
