It’s been a long time coming but the next version of Windows Home Server is finally here. Microsoft have released details and issues a public beta of “Vail” the latest version of Windows Home Server.

This week on the podcast I will be talking to Windows Home Server MVP Andrew Edney all about the new release and you can try it for yourself from Microsoft’s connect site (If your really quick you can send over question for Andrew)

Here are some of the features of Vail (from Andrew’s excellent WHS site UsingWindowsHomeServer.com)

  • Extending media streaming outside the home or office
  • Multi-PC backup and restore
  • Simplified setup and user experience
  • Expanded development and customization tools for partners

Microsoft have released a nice video showing the features in action which is definitely worth checking out but they also warn that you should only try the beta on a secondly machine as this is only a beta

To get hold of the beta go to https://connect.microsoft.com/WindowsHomeServer (note it’s 64bit only)

  1. Been looking forward to this but I will wait for it to be released and mature before thinking about using it, my current setup is so solid I don’t want to risk that for now

  2. It looks good testing it out now !!! Just 1 note , does anyone have a antivirus that works on it yet ??

  3. No Media Center? If they get Media Center in Vail, and then remoteFX (that will come for Windows Server 2008 R2), with the rumors of an Xbox 360 with a new and small form factor, this would be a real winner for the extenders… Assuming the nre Xbox will be silent… Too much assumptions, I guess…
