New wiki guide for Transcode 360

It seems there is still allot of confusion over Transcode 360 and
how to get it setup properly, I’ve decided to write a new updated Wiki guide as some things have changed now since the last one here.

This
new guide covers updating the mencoder.exe and ffmpeg.exe files,
tweaking the MEncoderTranscoder.cs file to enable multi-thread decoding.

I also look at using Transcode 360 with Media Browser this time and talk more about local vs network setups with WHS.

Hopefully
users can follow this guide and get transcode 360 working. The guide is
based on a 32bit Vista Media Center setup, I’ve not tried this on
Windows 7 lately but things should work pretty much the same way.

Use at your own risk and make sure you have a full backup of your system before you start.

You can see the new wiki guide here it’s in PDF so you need Adobe Reader.

Given the native transcoding in Windows 7, does Transcode 360 actually get used? I’m just wondering how the apps know whether to use native or Transcode 360 transcoding. I would prefer Transcode 360 because the picture quality for mkv’s using the native transcoding in Windows 7 is terrible.

That’s why the guide was written for Vista ! Who knows? No one seems to know much about the new native transcoding in Win7 and how and when it works.

I’m hoping we won’t need transcode 360 for MKV’s in Windows 7 the Divx preview thing should make them play natively on the extenders. So no transcoding at all.

We will still need T360 for DVD VOB playback on the extenders however.

Hi Stuart, Do you use T360 for DVD’s in Media Browser? I am trying to find the best solution for a headless media center with DVD collection. I have Win7 and am using Vaders transcode app. It is working great but I don’t really care for the windows movie library.

His app seems to be the best at transcoding an actual ripped DVD in the DVD format. VIDEO_TS, with all VOB’s, .IFO’s, and .BUP’s, selecting the main movie and playing..

I don’t want to have to do anything special to the movies.. ie convert to dvr-ms, rip to sigle VOB, rip main movie only, etc.

Just use MKV2VOB leave transcoding on for DTS>AC3@448 and no transcoding for video. Save as AVCHD file(M2TS) Takes 3-5 minutes…. Plays on 360 extenders just fine…Fast forward skip forward etc works too. No need to install that Divx bloatware..

Considering that most peple actually downloads MKV’s 3-5 minuttes extra should be of no concern..
