Again this is not a shock, HP had no TVs or Extenders at CES and according to Gizmodo HP have confirmed the discontinued the MediaSmart TV and Connect (extender)
There will not be any follow on MediaSmart TV or MediaSmart Connect products in 2009. With the PC at the center of the experience, HP continues to be committed to delivering high-definition, connected entertainment to consumers around the world
So that just leaves the Xbox 360 and Toshiba, like I have said before I will be surprised the Toshiba device ever goes on sale. With the increase in DLNA devices I wonder if this would lead to a shift in emphasis? Rather than having a unified experience on the TV, maybe we will see each manufacture making DLNA compatible devices that can consume Media from any other DLNA device? On Geektonic Bret is saying maybe Microsoft will bring out their own branded Extender, its a great idea but I can’t see it happening there does not just seem to be the market.
So for now I am sticking with the 360 but I am considering a PC connected directly to the TV if the right hardware came along

…. in 2009… what about 2010?
Something weird might be happening! I would like to see softsled introduced, but at the same time, I don’t want the extender concept to end. As far as extenders go, the 360 is just too loud. Let’s hope something nice is coming our way.
No extenders, no Charlie Owen, not a good week for MC
This has been a wild week for the extender market. Wow. More and more, the connected PC seems like the way to go. My extender is so nice an quiet and rebooting it is quick an painless compared to a PC.
I’m wondering if the market will bring something kind of like a headless netbook. This would give it the normal PC ability where codecs are concerned and yet still be small and worthy of a spot next to the tv.
Does anyone really know and is under NDA??
That’s that then! Mini PC based extenders is the way to go now MS we need Soft Sled more than ever!
… and so the Media Center PC-to-PC Hive validates it’s existence once again…
