How to enable "Play to" on your Windows 7 machine

imageThere is a new and quite cool feature of Windows 7 that shows some serious promise and is just one fantastic freebie of the Windows Media Player 12.  It’s called “Play to” and it lets you play music on any DLNA 1.5 devices from Media Player 12.  You can also “Play to” any Windows 7 machine.  All you need to do is this:

  1. 1. Launch Windows Media Player 12 (it should be on your task bar or you can start it by hitting the Start button and typing “media player” into the search)
  2. 2. Click the “Share” button
  3. 3. From the resulting drop down select “Receive media on your network”

And that’s it.  You’ll now be able to send music to that PC from another Windows 7 PC.

This is a fantastic feature, but it has so much more potential than it currently does…kinda makes me wish I owned a Roku and not a Squeezebox.

Does this not work on the Squeezebox? I thought Ian said that it did

Ian that’s interesting, right now I can’t find anything positive to say about Squeezebox and Play To. The DLNA website doesn’t list any Logitech devices (or a squeezebox) as being DLNA compliant. There’s also comments on the squeezebox forums to say that they won’t be supporting DLNA (mind you there about a year or so old). It’s not looking good right now.

If there is a way to do it, I’d love it….if anyone has a way?

Anyone have a list of compatible DLNA 1.5 devices that work with “Play to”?
