One of the most popular addins for Windows Media Center is going away, TV Tonic is turning off it’s service while they “restructure”. You will still be able to use TV Tonic to consume RSS video channels but the main services will not be available. Michael Sprague President of Wavexpress (the company behind TVTonic) said “In these tough financial times we are faced with the need to take down the TVTonic service while we restructure for the future.”. He also says to check back for news at a later date. It’s sad that an innovate service like TVTonic can’t make application pay and hopefully they can work out a way to bring it back in the future.

  1. Yikes! This is very bad news indeed. Out of all the add-ins this is the only one I really used.

Now I’m pissed off. Anyone know of an alternative?

  2. I have no alternative and I’m with you. This was one of my most used addins and it will be sorely missed. I know you can still use it for RSS video feeds but the programming they provided was great!

  3. I am very sad. They were such a big partner at the start of last year too. I wonder how well it’s going to work as just a video pod catcher….will I have to find another?

  4. This is a real shame.

I think they are in this situation primarily due to poor marketing. I consider myself fairly technical but I didn’t know TVTonic existed before the NBC Olympics promotion and even then I didn’t know what it could do beyond that.

Hopefully they can work something out in the near future. I only got to use TVTonic for about a month but I could easily see it being my primary TV viewing experience if they could figure out a way to network shows through the service as well as the new media shows.

  5. A shame. I enjoyed TVTonic so much I was considering dropping my cable and just relying on that. I guess that leaves TVersity now, but it is so clunky by comparison. Media Center is fast becoming useless…
