Bye Bye One Care

As you probably know from previous posts on the subject, I was a real fan of Windows Live One care.  The simplicity of the products approach, the fact that it looked nice and that it did a job were all good for me.  It looks like it was slightly less successful and to be honest the product was more bloated than it needed to be and as Live Side point out the product is at odds with some other Live offerings.

Microsoft will be releasing a new product code-named “Morro” which will be a stripped down Malware protection program.  By stripped down they mean that it won’t do back-ups (but then you use your Home Server and Sky Drive and Mesh for that) and it won’t have printer sharing (again you use your Home Server) and there won’t be any circles.

I’m still going to be renewing my OneCare subscription though because I need AV and Microsoft will continue support with Malware signatures until the subscriptions run out.  The great news though is that Morro will be free, which should help get the masses sure, and me.

OneCare will stop being sold in June 2009 in retail, and as soon as Morro hits the download site through other channels.
