Interesting post from Chris saying he has a tip that Microsoft is going to produce some kind of headless Media Center appliance, which Chris says he is shocked to here about. I am surprised too as it makes so much sense, it’s what Ed Bott and I discussed on show #169 and the best way of creating the perfect Media Center experience, it’s still two complicated to get services like CableCARD working.  It would also make sense to offer this in a package like Windows Home Server and combined unit would obviously be the way to go, one box serving all your digital media, cablecard, tuners and backups. I still want to see Windows Media Center being part of Vista but like to see an appliance as another option. Lets make Media Center scale from a laptop, to a CE box to a big Windows based Media Server.

I’ve just gotten a tip from a very reliable source that Microsoft is looking to take Media Center off the desktop and turn it into a CE appliance. The only information that I have is that it is planned to be a headless device of some sort. Other details are very scarce at this point with no timeline to speak of, but I’ve been assured that Microsoft is actively working on such a project.

I hope the tip is right but it does seem to good to be true.
