Media Center MVP Richard Miller has noticed that a new update for Windows Messenger (KB946648) is causing problems with XP Media Center. The error “Messenger ThumbSnap.com Free Image hostingfailure: Media Center was unable to open Messenger. Please make sure that Windows Messenger is installed on your system” occurs when Media Center starts up after the patch has been installed.

To stop the error from showing up you have to un-tick “Allow instant messages within Media Center” which you will find in under Settings>Messenger and Caller ID, unfortunately the errors prevents you from accessing this setting so you have to uninstall the update (946648) then un-tick the setting and then you can re-install the update. An other solution is to remove Windows Messenger and use Windows Live Messenger

  1. Copy and paste this below in notepad and save as a reg file (Whatever.reg).

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\ehshell.exe]
    “AllowMessengerExecHandleFailure”=dword:00000001

  2. Way to go Richard!
All the trouble described in the previous postings replaced with one simple thing – you are a genius!

  3. Not a genius, but thanks 🙂
The registry setting was in the KB article that the bottom of the page, all I need to do was add the Media Center (ehshell.exe) to the end of that registry line.

  4. So I followed your instruction and it got rid of the message . I tried to record but it said there was no tv signal. Yet I am able to watch tv and have the internet on my split screen.

    Can you help

  5. Thanks for this information. But when I went to the Control Panel to uninstall update 946648, it says I can’t uninstall this update?

    Help?

  6. Richard is the man. Yep I installed SP3 and had this problem. I tried updating the messenger and it didn’t work. Luckily, Richard trick worked. Thanks again Richard. Everybody try that trick.

  7. I’ve opened regedit but I can’t find [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\ehshell.exe]

I haven’t worked with registry before so i don’t know what to do

  8. I updated:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\ehshell.exe

    ( added ehshell.exe)

but where exactly you put the following
    “AllowMessengerExecHandleFailure”=dword:00000001”

    Thanks,

  9. Have a similar issue. When trying to burn recorded movies on advd i get en error message ‘unable to find dvd recorder’. How can solve this

  10. Richard or anyone willing help,

I (think) I’m having the same Messanger/Media Center problem preventing me from recording, so I tried this (below) .reg solution but am not sure what I’m supposed to do after I save the file or exactly where I should save. If anyone or Richard can provide a next step instruction it will be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Larry
