    Sad [:(] Stuttering DVR-MS playback on DMA2100

I am having very poor performance on playback of DVR-MS files (that have been created with VideoReDo) on my Linksys DMA2100 Extender.
The original file is a MPG2 created by Beyond TV.

This is a copy of the VideoReDo 'Video Program Info' for the original file:

    File Name: D:\MyVideos\Studio Portraits-2008-01-06-0.mpg
    File Size: 2673659930 ( 2.49 GB )
    Program Duration: 01:04:54.18
    File Type: PS - MPEG2
    Encoding: MPEG 2
    Video stream Id: xE0
    Encoding Dimensions: 720 x 576
    Display Size: 720 x 576
    Aspect Ratio: 4/3
    Frame Rate: 25.00 FPS
    Bit Rate: 4.999 Mbps
    VBV_Buffer: 224 KB
    Profile: Main/Main
    Progressive: Prog or Int
    Chroma: 4:2:0
    Audio Format: Layer 2
    Audio Stream Id: xC0
    Audio Bit Rate: 224 Kbps
    Audio Sampling Rate: 48000 Hz

I've tried saving it with 4 and 2Mps bit rate, but it doesn't help.

All of the verisons of the DVR-MS files I've created with VRD play fine on the Vista MC PC.

Are there any recomendations about how the DVR-MS file should be configured to work reliably with Extenders?

PS: My Extender is connected via 100Mbps wired LAN. The content is stored on a server (not the Vista PC).
PPS: I don't have any 'native' DVR-MS files to try because my VMC doesn't record.

    Cheers,
    Geoff.

Re: Stuttering DVR-MS playback on DMA2100

I had an issue with playing DVR-MS files created in VideoReDo from ripped DVD Vob's to my XBOX 360 MCX. They were blocky and jumpy at the start of the movies, enabling flow control on my network adapter card properties on the VMC PC seemed to clear that problem up for me, might be worth checking it out.

Thanks cw-kid.  I'll see if there are any settings I can change.

    Cheers,

Re: Stuttering DVR-MS playback on DMA2100

I tried enabling Flow Control.  It did make a change to the way the DVR-MS file played back - it was less 'choppy'.  There is just a little break up, but it pauses every few seconds.  I tried changing a few other settings like Transmit/Receive Buffers, and forcing 100MBs Full-Duplex, but they didn't help.

However, I think this shows it is a network problem.  To see if this was the case I moved the file to the Public Recorded TV folder on the Vista Media Centre local hard drive and tried to play it on the Extender - Hey presto!  It played flawlessy!!   So it seems the Extender is having problem accessing the DVR-MS file that is resident on a server, not the VMC.

When I was playing the file on the Extender while it was resident on the server I got the [Network Problem] button on the screen.  When I said Yes to running the Network Tuning process it immediately failed, saying it was unable to run at this time.  The same thing happens if I run the Network Tuning from the Extender menu option.  Does this Network Tuning wizard work for others who are using 100Mbs wired connections?

It has definately worked for me on wired 100mbps, I switched to gigabit a little while ago and it works for me on gigabit now. I don't think anything has changed between now and then.

Do you get any errors in event log when it fails?

Re: Stuttering DVR-MS playback on DMA2100

Finally got time to get back to this issue.

No - there are no entries in the Vista Event Logs when the network test fails.

I have tried plugging the Vista, Extender & Server into the same 1GB switch, and it made no difference to the DVR-MS play back!

    I'm stumped. :(
