This HTPC was originally a MCE XP 2005 install, but recently I invested in another 750 GB hard drive, and partitioned it for a 44GB Software install.  I then proceeded to install Vista Ultimate 32 bit

For a few days, it worked fine and slowly I did the upgrades and all seemed well.  But one day, (Tuesday?) I lost TV and My recordings with a component Registration failure error message.

I  Rolled back using the Restore points, and also restored from my WHS but all to no avail.  When I receive the message, I was simply having to re-install....

However,  I found that if I did a re-install and then backed that up onto my WHS, then I could simply restore from my WHS which saved significant time.  I also soon found out that this time the Restore Feature was also working, so if I changed something, a simple use of the restore feature would get me back live TV

As such I was able to quickly develop a pattern.  It is simply this.

Changing the default TV settings (ie location of where to record my files to, a local partition of a hard drive simply called My TV with about 400 GB. Adding a space to the WHS system as described on a couple of forums including Ian’s also failed.)   Simply by clicking on Recorder and changing the settings or adding further drives causes VMC to produce a critical error message. Upon restarting, all TV options are useless, with the component registration error message.

Even editing the registry using regedit causes the same error message.

As such whilst I seem to have a stable but basic Vista Ultimate media box, I cannot do what I should be able to do.

Another point, during the weekend, after letting Vista update it self, the media PC became very unstable...

Thank god for my WHS, restoring is so easy (if not slightly time consuming)

I would value any suggestions or ideas as to how I can persuade VMC to allow me to record onto other hard drive partitions, as 44GB will soon fill up with recordings, unless I regularly transfer the files across.Ideally I would like to configure the ssystem to record onto my WHS system, not necessary for backup but rather to have all my tv shows in one location

I am liking Vista VMC alot compared to MCE 2005.  However at least in 2005, I could record onto another hard drive.  I will also try the registry hack this evening if II remember for accessing data “recorded TV” on my WHS system.
