Did that and no luck.  When I click on a recorded TV program in the Recorded TV folder on WHS from the VMC, it plays great in the VMC.  I can see \\SERVER\Photos and \\SERVER\Videos from within the VMC GUI fine.  But...no Recorded TV!  Checked the Registry and Watched Folders are still set up great.  I think it is a WHS problem as I had this working last week until I had to reboot WHS for other reasons.

On WHS "Recorded TV" folder go to the Security tab then Advanced (lower right). clear the "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects.Include these with entries explicitly defined here" make sure that check box is uncheck .

OK...both of the boxes were unchecked.  BTW, modded the registry on my desktop (Vista Ultimate) and tried it here and Recorded TV shows up in the Video Library on it.

And, the current owner is shown as Everyone...whatever that means.

If you can test this, go back to the "Recorded TV" folder on WHS,  then Sharing tab and the Security tab, and edit it so it shows only  the Anonymous Logon and Everyone in the Sharing tab and the Security tab.
Log off WHS do not reboot WHS.
Reboot Vista see if it shows up then.

WOW!  That worked!!!  I don't know why, but it came back.  Now, what happens if I have to reboot WHS as  I am having to do every other day for other issues?  Thanks Mucho!

I'm having trouble getting this working too.

Very simple seteup: MCE2005 machine, and trying to record live TV to an RC1 WHS, and then watch it back.

I followed the guide once and seemed to get it working, and also put the batch file in, but following a restart of the WHS and MCE, it doesn't seem to work any more.  MCE reverted back to looking on C: for it's Recorded TV, and even though the server address is showing in the registry of the MCE machine as a watched folder, the DVR-MS content that is already there is not appearing in the Recorded TV menu in MCE...

Looking at the WHS though, all the settings in the walkthrough still seem to be there.

Also not sure if I'm being stupid, but when following through the instructions, I do NOT have a share tab when I right-click on the Recorded TV folder in WHS.  I have "General / Security / Previous Versions / Customise".  Why are there references to a 'sharing' tab which I don't have?!

Edit: Just ran through the steps and it's working again - am petrified to reboot either PC again now for fear of losing everything again :)

Sure enough, although rebooting the MCE machine didn't seem to cause problems, a couple of reboots on the WHS later (for other issues) and the connection is broken again Sad

Hi.

I'm a newbie here (just found this site today having watched one of Ian's videos on 'You Tube').  Great site - I have bookmarked and joined the forum.

I would describe myself as something of an 'enthusiast' (built a few PCs including a then kickass MCE about 2 years ago) but by no means at the same level as some of you although I am working on it.

Having just set up 2 x new Vista PCs & a PTP network for a friend who runs a business from home I was somewhat perplexed by the inability to point the user folders to a network location a la XP (happy to be corrected if that is possible) and was drawn to this thread as in planning my own future requirements recording TV to the WHS is going to be an essential requirement.

Am I right in thinking that by the time this gets to full release this will work 'out of the box' and you guys are effectively pre-release testers helping to get the bugs ironed out?  I just can't see the average end users jumping through these kind of hoops to get it working.

In a WHS equipped home TV has to record to the server and then be viewable in, and from the list refreshed on, each client PC.

Anyway, keep up the good work!

Regards

Simon

Alex:

I've got it all working well now but there is one thing I like to know.

When recording with multiple pc's I noticed that the recording list is not always up to date on every pc.

When a recording is finisht on pc A and I want to watch it on pc B the recording doesn't always directly appears in the recording list. When stopping the ehsched service the list will be refreshing. But when doing this while a recording takes place the recording will be interrupted and start over again a second time. I do record on three MCE machines.

Is there is simple way to refresh the recording list. Why doesn't MCE just read the recorded folder to see what's in it?

Hi Alex

I set-up the seconed MCE PC, added a tuner card about hour ago and set the registry to record to the Server (eg \\Server\Recorded TV).
Then recorded TV from the new MCE(seconed PC) to the server, and checked the "Recorded TV" on the main MCE PC(old PC), and that recorded TV show is there in the recorded list.

Also there was no need to reboot, restart Media Center or stop the ehsched service , for that new recorded TV from server to show up in "Recorded TV" on main MCE,  It works without refreshing.

Edit: Both the MCE PCs are running MCE 2005 not Vista .

Richard,

I screwed up.  My WHS had basically stopped working in the past two weeks (Backups only, the use of it as a server for VMS media including Recorded TV has been working great) so I did a Server Re-install today.  But, when I was in the Registry here:

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

to add Recorded TV, I ended up with just that entry...the previous entries were deleted.  And, I can't find a similar Registry entry on any of my other Vista machines to copy.  Can you post what should be in that reg entry including the Recorded TV please?  Thanks for all you have done to help me and others make WHS useful.

Ted

P.S., Does RTM mean "Rush to Market"?   Just curious!

Yep no problem in KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters on WHS the two entries are

COMCFG

DFS$

 Recorded TV

RTM is "release to manufacturing"

Hello,

I've got an interesting issue going on with my setup. I followed all of your steps and right off the bat everything worked perfect. I then had to restart my WHS so I made sure the bat file was in place and restarted the system. I then checked the sharing and security permissions and they were in fact updated to the correct settings as set forth in the bat file. I then checked my MCE XP box and none of the recordings on the WHS share are there anymore. I tried restarting the MCE box and nothing. I also removed the WHS Share from the "WatchedFolders" key, restarted it, then re added it and still nothing.

Any ideas on what happened and how I might resolve this?

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Reset the "WatchedFolders" on MCE and reboot MCE.

On the MCE PC there should be a WHS Shared folder on MCE desktop.

Click on that folder then recorded TV folder, go to the Security tab then Advanced (lower right). clear the "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects.Include these with entries explicitly defined here"  make sure that the check box is uncheck .
