In Ians' book it menyions that you CAN play Divx movies via the Xbox 360 extender so long as you have the correct codecs installed.

I believe I have since all the films play on the PC and the Divx bundle has been installed.

What codec version if any will work?  Does anyone have this working?

Thanks.

You can play Divx movies on the Xbox360, but only on the Xbox blade, Divx movies will not play on the Xbox360 in Media Center UI.
The new V2 extenders will play DivX in Media Center.

You can use an application like Transcode 360 to get Divx via Media Center on the 360

Its a real shame the XBOX 360 MCX does not support DIVX natively, I hate dropping out to the XBOX Dashboard to play content. I find the My Movies add-in with Transcode 360 works really well for transcoding AVI files to WMV on the fly. The new V2 extenders support DIVX in the MCX natively its about time the XBOX 360 MCX caught up! Sad

i have a feeling they will very soon....  if you give it some time it will probably be quicker than researching/implementing a conversion method to get the video to play.

What makes you think that?

Hi,

I'm curious on why you think this as well, jagowar.

I've actually just posted about this over on TGB (http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/thread/252779.aspx) as I've just bought a 360 and am planning my approach for watching my videos. I believe that MS will update the 360 to support these formats, and it'd be nice if it is "very soon" but I'm just not that optimistic!

Can you ground out this comment any? If it really will be very soon then I might decide not to explore any of the other options and just wait for native support.

Hi,

In my opinion divx and other codecs will only be on the extender part of xbox, after the V2 extenders are widely available.

Right now people are paying premium for the V2 extenders, and the way to sell those, besides being silent, smaller and consuming less power, (ok, they're wireless too, but I don't believe in wireless extenders too much) is their hability to play all the codecs people want. I think Microsoft might have some kind of agreement with linksys, d-links and the others, not to bring this features to xbox for some months, to let them penetrate the market. I think Microsoft is really interested in having hardware partners for the extenders, so Xbox users must wait. In time, videos encoded with this codecs, will be available in the Media Center interface as they are already outside of it.

Are there any updates on this?  I just set up my 360 to be an extender and was unpleasantly surprised to see that it didn't support divx files in the MCE interface.  In any case I installed Transcode 360 as Ian suggested but still could not get my 360 to recognize the divx/avi even though it plays fine in Window Media Player on my Vista machine.

Any thoughts or suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?  Thanks.

Hi There,

I didn't get a 360 but a Linksys 2200 instead.  This does play some .avi (divx and xvid) but not all.  I have yet to find out why not!

I tried insatlling an app call GPOT www.headbands.com/gspot/

But I still could not determine why they didn't play on the extender.  They all play on the PC!

I cannot believe that the Transode video quality can compare to a pre-compressed film.

Sorry not much help.

The extender piece is all new to me so I'm still feeling it out.  If anyone has advice on the Transcode 360 piece that would be great.  Also what have you guys been using to transcode to wmv's?  Both from .avi and DVD's.

Thanks.

Could be this issue:

Linksys V2 extenders, if you are having issues playing back certain movies on the extender you might want to look at the Fourcc Changer utility. Because the DMA 2100 and 2200 have issues playing AVI files if the fourcc code in the file is set to DIVX or DX50.
Changing the fourcc code to XVID instead using the Fourcc Changer utility then allows the files to play fine.

I installed transcode at the weekend and have it running with MyMovies on an Xbox. I didn't do all the steps that are identified in toby's post (which is where I believe you CW-KID copied the info from, but everything seems ok, though I haven't tried a VOB yet.

What does the regedit, mencoder etc fix, over and above what is already happening with Transcode? I have to say, I'm always nervous about doing regedit...especially if it's not my machine....a bit of a blind leap of faith that you guys know what you're talking about.
