One of the main benefits for Windows 7 for Media Center users is the Home Group feature. This enables content sharing between machines and you can use the Play To feature to play music or video on another devices or PC on your network. Today at CES Microsoft’s Mike Seamons demoed the features and I must say they are looking very cool.

Great post, Ian, and terrific to see some of the exciting things ahead for Media Center.  Enjoy your trip to Los Vegas.

We need to be able to initiate Play To a device from Media Center ideally not just WMP12

totally agree cw-kid, having to inside media center could really make multi room audio, pictures and video really easy to setup. really hope they add this feature and remember make it possible to synchronise the playing between the different devices including the one you are on.

Does this actually allow multi-room audio then?  Can I send a stream to multiple devices at once and have it play in sync?

I get the option to Play To the XBOX 360 MCX in WMP12 but only when your extender session is connected. It will not play in sync to multiple devices at the same time currently to my knowledge and only does music ? As it's not currently working on my system due to an error I can't test it properly hoping a clean install of the offical beta will resolve it.

I'm really excited about this DLNA inclusion.  I've contacted the alliance for an interview which should be coming soon.  I noticed as well that you have to have the extender session connected.  I'll have to wait to test it later this week when I install on my main MCE.

Maybe I need to play with this hands-on, but this feature doesn't really excite me. I would rather see the Zune streaming service available in VMC, including all connected extenders.

Nice!  Very, very cool!  Good to hear Mike promoting the party line about moving state around vs. just streaming it remotely.  I got my new 500 gig sata2 and I am ready to blow away my trusty old MCE 2005 HTPC to load 7.   Cannot wait.  My struggle now is do i get rid on my WHS to have it run Windows 7 also?   Seems like redundant systems with overlapping roles would be better than two disparate systems... hmmm..
