What was good and what wasn’t in 2008?

It’s that time of year to reflect on the last twelve months, so I wondered what has been good and bad for you in the Windows Media Center ecosystem. TV Pack (the update known as Fiji) came and maybe due to the way the project was handled and the expectations of the community the release was a big disappointment to some people (and for some it had no impact at all).  However we have seen some great promise from Windows Media Center in Windows 7 with new features and a updated UI. There was disappointment around the failure of the DIRECTV Tuner project but we saw some IP based solutions coming like TunerFree MCE.

On a personal note I was very happy with TheDigitalLifestyle.com site re-design and the new bloggers that have joined and the contributions from the community.

So for you what was your biggest Media Center disappointment in 2008 and what was your biggest win for Windows Media Center in 2008?

Biggest disappointment: Still no HD support in MCE

The biggest win: DVB-S support with the TV Pack

Bad

Yes still no support for HD, the way TV-Pack was handled & hardly any support for system builders.

Good

some very good 3rd party app's eg My Movies, TunerFree MCE etc

The BAD

TV Pack was a disaster.

Uncertain upgrade future for those that have invested in OEM OCUR systems.  (Both for TV pack and Win7)

No Sideshow devices materialized

The Good

More Extenders!  (And price drops on them)

Let's hope 2009 is a better year for Media Center

The Good: hmm, not much. that plugin emucenter is pretty cool shame there are some irritating bugs but i'm sure it will get better in the future.

The bad. finding out that the next os has pretty much the same media center as the last one.

getting the impression that media center is just another app and not really being pushed anymore, shame.

Bad: Fiji TV pack for VMC wasn't released to the general public. Amazon mp3 announced that 2008 would be the year of going international, so far only UK is covered.

Good: Windows Home Server PowerPack 1 fixed the data corruption bug. Win7 might not be so far away as I initially thought.

The Good - support for Netlix on Extenders

The Bad -Netflix move to Silverlight which broke the extender support for Netflix
