What kind of tuners where you trying to get DVBLink to work with? I would like to get a Net Top to replace my tower which just died, but it would mean replacing my Dual Tuner PCI card. I thought DVBLink Server pack would be the solution, letting me move my tuner card to my WHS.

However my tuner takes S-Video from a blaster-controlled STB. DVBLink does not work with analog tuners. If your tuner is ATSC or QAM it might work. If you have a STB it seems the only solution is the HDPVR.

In regards to Mediaroom, this is the way I understand it will work (I am a Uverse subscriber). Mediacenter will be able to receive and decode the TV stream directly through the network, and save to the local HDD. This would be like cable card for Uverse, but without the need for any hardware. If AT&T implements this, it will succeed where Dish and DirecTV have failed.

There will also be a Mediaroom tab on the main menu which leads to the Mediaroom UI. In this area the Media Center will act like a Mediaroom client STB, and be able to access and schedule recordings on the DVR using the Whole Home DVR functionality that Uverse already has.

This would almost be like softsled. You could use Media Center's native live TV section on any PC without needing a tuner anywhere. You can have centralized EPG if you record programs to the DVR. There wasn't any mention of DRM for recordings made to the Media Center. Hopefully it will be possible to play them on other PCs in the Home Group, but I think it is more likely to have the same restrictions as cable card recordings.

There will also be the ability of IPTV providers to offer pay-per-view to any subscribers who have broadband internet, using Silverlight Smooth Streaming.

Hopefully AT&T rolls out this functionality. If it does, then any $200 Net Top I buy could be an extender.

I am totally on the side that dish is a huge blow to media center. It really is the big thing media center could offer that the other solutions could not. Having it backed by MS who could go after these kinds of deals to get dish/directv tuners.

Directv is ~16 million subscibers now and Dish is ~14. Thats a huge chunk of people who cant even consider media center. Comcast is the only company with a larger subscriber base than either dish or direct. Now there are still alot more people on cable that dish but you are talking about excluding a big chunk of people because these tuners keep falling by the wayside.

I personally see no future at all in media center unless they have something really big to show at ces10.

In order to get your S3 standby mode to work correctly you must not only configure the power options on your HTPC but you must also make sure you have allowed S3 mode in the BIOS. Also, in order to properly wake the machine over the LAN you need to configure the ethernet adapter settings in Device Manager and the BIOS to allow for Wake-On-Lan....

I have no idea when Jere's solution will be complete. He appears to be hard at work though so hopefully it won't be too long.

The higher bitrate files are messing up for me as well. I can tell you that Jere's solution will replace the Divx Tech Preview. You shouldn't need it once he has his going.

Just wondering but related to the mkv stuff..... Is what Jere doing (or will be doing) replace the divx tech preview stuff or compliment it?

And when will his stuff be out (because the divx tech preview is nice but Im having some troubles with it related to higher bitrate hd sources). Would love to see if this could do it any better. Because mkv is the defacto standard for both movie ripping and torrent stuff (hd tv shows). And getting good reliable mkv support in media center would be awesome.

hey,

about the free over the air in europe.

yes, there are thousands of channels, but 80% of them is crap (100% ads or tv shopping scams)

there are some but few HD channels

pay tv is also broatcasted over satellite, but it is encripted, so you need a key card to plug in your receiver.

and it is true that you are not illegal if you hack content that you cannot buy in your country (example: german pay tv in france or belgium), but that is not easy, not anymore at least.

And most important: i cannot imagine that you can get signal from the satellites for europe in the usa.(www.brymar.co.uk/.../astra_sky.html)

as far as i know the area covered by a satellite is sort of an ellipse which is oriented nord-south. so there is overlap with north-africa, but not america.

i have not used it with MC yet, so i don't know about PG

you can install win7 on VHD. just like file on you C drive

Press key combination Shift + F10, the wizard starts a command prompt CMD.EXE. In the CMD.EXE program run diskpart. A bit forward, and receive an invitation DISKPART>

Next is a few steps - establishment of a direct file. VHD, the future of the disk to install a new copy of Windows 7, the selection and installation of this file as a "real" in terms of the wizard disk.

The invitation DISKPART> enter the command create vdisk file = "C: \ Win7.vhd" type = FIXED maximum = 30720

This command creates the file. VHD on drive C: named Win7.vhd (drive, folder location and file name depends on your system, and fantasies), the maximum size of the future of the virtual disk is defined as 30GB, with the type. VHD is defined as "fixed size, ie original file will hold 30GB in the "parent" file system. This will ensure better performance and less chance of disruption, pokolku if you specify type as "dynamically scalable" (type = EXPANDABLE), then, firstly, it will require additional disk operations as the need to increase the real size. VHD, and secondly, when "suddenly" on the parent section of the place will end before the file reaches its maximum size - then the consequences for the OS that uses it, no one answers:) On the other hand - 30GB of disk space is more than enough to install the system, the more files that the user may be stored on the file system "physical" disk, which will also be available to the OS installed on. VHD. And then a dynamic type allows you to save disk space. The choice, as they say - for you. For a more complete acquaintance with the parameters create vdisk recommend learn by following the line DISKPART> command help create vdisk

The test updates for Windows 7 mentioned in this update are just that, test updates. They *are* official microsoft updates, but they don't actually change anything, it's just a test to make sure windows update is working properly in 7.

Great episode. Downloaded PGC.net and AutoGK and ran them both with much success. I've been trying quite a few programs but these seem to be the best for what I want in ripping DVDs. Also bought another DMA-2100 through Dell's offer. Will justify it later.

I really enjoyed this episode. It was good to hear two people who actually enjoy using WMC and aren't just technically dissecting it. I am not a tech guy but I really enjoy using WMC and playing around with it after work.

Thanks for the feedback Magnus! You're right on the music, at least about it being too long. That was my fault this time. I was trying to put the show out quickly and didn't think to cut it down this time. You won't hear it play that long again. I like the jazz myself but I'm always looking for something new.

With the problems with the leaked beta: That was all speculation on my part. I (and probably no one but MS or those close to MS than I am) didn't know that the leaked version would be the same as the actual beta. Both stories hit at the same time and it seemed odd to me. I don't think any company can prevent piracy anymore (look at Spore) and it wouldn't surprise me if at some point, a company might try this strategy in order to stop it from spreading.

Thanks again for the feedback. Anything that can help me make the podcast better is appreciated!

Some comments on what was being said about the Win 7 MP3 flaw:

1) The official beta and the leaked beta are identical, so no, it's not a piracy anti-meassure

2) There is already a patch for the bug

3) The bug only effects MP3 files with a header that's larger than 16kb and corrupts them if the ID3 tag is updated, so even if you haven't installed the patch, you only have to avoid editing the files and turn off automatic retrieval of song information

...and one piece of feedback: The jazz intro music is horrible and plays for waaaay too long

Great podcast, you mention about “RadioTime” its a great app I use it in conjunction with “Red Button” for years it records Internet radio, I set up the recorded path to “My Music”.

The recorded Internet radio shows up in Media Center in “My Music”.
