Windows Media Center (codenamed "Freestyle" during development) is an application with a 10-foot user interface designed to serve as a home-entertainment hub for the living-room TV. It is included in Windows XP Media Center Edition, which must be installed as an operating system, as the application cannot be added to an existing installation of XP. It is also included in premium editions of Windows Vista (Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate) and Windows 7 (all editions, except Starter and Home Basic). It is designed to be controlled by special remote controls which prominently feature the Green Button (similar to the logo to the right), but can also be operated with a mouse and/or keyboard. This button is used to either launch Media Center from Windows or to return to the Start Menu from within the application. Media Center plays the computer user's pictures, videos, and music from local hard drives, optical drives, and network locations. It then categorizes them by name, date, tags, and other file attributes. Media managed through Media Center can also be relayed via a home network to standard TV sets via the specially designed Windows Media Center Extender or the Xbox 360.

i'm not the dev, but he's quite a big (vista) media center fan and as the plugin is just a launcher for games most of the work just goes into making it look good so I doubt they'll be another system launch.I am doing <a href="www.braindumps.net/.../a> certification right now.

Keep going. Making an item CHANGE is a little more advanced and covered in a later post. You'll find that the function you need to call is "FirePropertyChanged", and you'll need to create a <binding> rule.

This post deals only with LOADING a value on application STARTUP. Keep going for the information you need, or read the book.

When using the source files from satge0, I was able to sucessfully make the changes until this stage. I don't seem to get the changes I make to the .cs file to be refelected in the label on the mcml form. I was not getting any errors, but decided to download your stage2 source and copied the contents of the Controls.mcml, StartPage.mcml and TriviaGame.cs to my copy of the stage0 source. Debug compile gives no errors, but again, I cannot update _GameName in the .cs and see that change in the Preview Tool.

So I am not sure what I am missing, but the stage2 source has a lot more in it that the source from stage0. Despite that, I definatly appreciate the guide. Thanks!

I've actually toned page 11 down quite a bit - but yes, the idea there is to 'burst your bubble' if you have specific ideas about the program you want to write in Media Center.

Rather than having you read the whole book to find out that what you wanted was impossible, I decided to list all of the things that most users THINK the Media Center SDK can do but actually doesn't. That way people won't complete waste their time designing and working on a product that just can't work.

I'd be happy with either, but would probably choose the PDF if both were available.

Anyway, I think a book is a great idea -- a way to get more developers in the community, and for casual programmers like myself who would like to dabble.

It's pretty simple - basically, if you have code like this...

<me:MyButton Name="HelloThere"/>

Then by changing the properties like Visible, Alpha, Scale etc. on the "HelloThere" object, you are in effect changing the properties of the FIRST (or PARENT) element in the HelloThere UI.

There WAS an open-source library of controls that I wrote (with some code from Niall Ginsbourg), called MCMLookalike.

However, after a full YEAR with nobody else contributing to the product and several people using the libraries and not adhering to the licence (it was Limited GPL, all they had to do was mention the libraries in their CREDITS and they didn't do it!), I shut the project down.

Remember, I'm a weekend developer too!

Is there any opensource library of controls? i am desperate to use if there is one.

I find it just too annoying to have to spend time on reinventing the wheel instead of working in the core application. As a weekend developer, its hard for me to do it.

Media Center is such a great concept and its a shame on microsoft to leave the developers out in the cold like this.

Can you please explain the following statement?

"If you wanted to set a property that changes a property in the FIRST element in a UI (which is almost always a panel or clip object) then you can do it from the PARENT. For example, Panel2 can change the Visible, Alpha, Scale, Position and other properties of each one of it's buttons."

Can you show an example for this?

As an end user of a few good 3rd party apps I'd much prefer them to look and more importantly feel like the rest of Media Center. It's obvious that the developers have gone to lot of effort to attempt to replicate the feel but it often falls short...
